Hotels and rentals

Hotels and other private businesses can ban cannabis use on their property, including parking areas. If you are booking a short-term rental, check the house rules before you arrive.

Where you can actually use it

Not on the lakefront, the beaches, the Riverwalk, in parks or on the sidewalk. Illinois bans use in any public place, meaning anywhere you could reasonably be seen by others. Adult use is for private residences where the owner allows it, away from anyone under 21.

Rental cars and rideshare

While the car is moving, cannabis must be in a sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant container. Any other container is a Class A misdemeanor. You cannot use cannabis in a vehicle, and driving under the influence is illegal.

Before you fly home

Finish it or leave it. Cannabis is illegal under federal law, and Illinois labels warn that transporting it outside Illinois is unlawful. Do not pack it for a flight out of O'Hare or Midway or a drive across state lines.
