Who can buy

Adults 21 and older can buy adult-use cannabis at licensed dispensaries with a valid government-issued photo ID. Registered medical cannabis patients buy under the separate medical program, with lower taxes.

Edible packagesAn Illinois edible package can hold at most 100 mg of THC, in servings of 10 mg.

Where you can use it

Adult use is for private residences where the owner allows it. You cannot use cannabis in any public place, which Illinois defines as anywhere you could reasonably be observed by others. That includes parks, beaches, sidewalks and government buildings.

You also cannot use it on school buses or school grounds, in correctional facilities, in a home used for licensed child care, anywhere the Smoke Free Illinois Act bans smoking, in a motor vehicle, or near anyone under 21 who is not a registered patient. Private businesses, including hotels, landlords and employers, can ban it on their property and parking lots.

Cars and driving

This is the rule that catches the most people. While a vehicle is moving, cannabis must be in a sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant container. Transporting it in any other container is a Class A misdemeanor. Cannabis cannot be used in a motor vehicle at all, and driving under the influence can lead to arrest.

Growing at home

Home growing is only allowed for registered qualifying medical cannabis patients. Adult-use customers cannot grow at home in Illinois.

Leaving Illinois

Illinois product labels warn that selling or transporting cannabis outside Illinois is unlawful. Cannabis is still illegal under federal law, so do not take it across state lines or onto a plane, even to another state where it is legal.

Consumption lounges

Illinois lets local governments authorize on-site consumption lounges, and the state does not license them. Dispensaries in Chicago sell for take-home use. If a venue says it allows consumption, confirm it is approved before you go.
